Chapter 17

“Ya. Me, too. It’s midnight already, so try to be awake at the usual time, so we can feed your daed.”

“Ya. Good night.” Kate barely restrained a jaw-cracking yawn. Immediately after putting on her gown and brushing her teeth, she decided not to take her braid out. She just unpinned it from the back of her head and left it alone. Falling into bed, she was asleep even before her head touched her pillow.

Very early the next morning, Kate groaned as she heard her mamm knocking at her door. “I’m up.” Forcing herself to sit up, she stretched. Feeling her braid, she slowly remembered that she hadn’t unbraided her hair. Gut. Less tangles. Getting dressed, she combed her hair, brushed her teeth and washed her face. Putting a clean prayer cap on, she went downstairs, still feeling the sleepiness in her eyes. When she looked at her mamm, she saw that Becky was as sleepy as she felt. “Gut morning. Or is it still midnight?”

Becky’s laugh was slow and tinged with her need for more sleep. “It feels like that, for sure and certain.” She exhaled and yawned. Shaking her head hard, she moved for the coffee pot. “Coffee. You make the eggs—scrambled— and bacon. I’m making cinnamon rolls.”

Kate’s eyes widened. “But you have to let the dough rise!”

“Already done. It had its two risings yesterday by the time we left for the first birth.” Becky, still trying to wake up, got busy with her baking.

Kate, behind her, worked on scrambling several eggs as the bacon popped and sizzled in the cast-iron pan. After several minutes, she poured the fluffy, bacon-flavored eggs into a large bowl.

“Gut job! The cinnamon rolls should be out in a minute. Becky quickly mixed confectioner’s sugar and milk in a small bowl, preparing the glaze for the rolls. Just as she finished glazing the rolls, Steve walked in.

“Mmmmm! This all smells so gut! Thanks to Gott, we can sit down and enjoy our breakfast. How many deliveries did you have yesterday?”

“Three. We were in just after midnight.” Becky stifled another yawn, and then took a large gulp of her hot coffee. “Owwww! Still too hot.”

“Will you two rest sometime today?”

“Ya. If there are no deliveries. I know we have a few patients who are near their times.”

Kate shook her head. “I’d better get used to this if I decide to become an obstetrician.”

“Yes, you had. And it may be that you’ll always be really busy—like last night.”

Kate sighed now. “I have a lot to think about.”

“You do. I do have one question. If you do decide to go to medical school, you’ll be much older than the usual age that our girls here marry. Will you marry someone from here or…?” Becky waited to hear Kate’s response.

Kate gave herself extra time by taking a large drink of her coffee. “I don’t know. There may not be any young men of my age when I come back—if I decide to go. I would have to marry someone who, like me, waited to marry.
